Graduate candidates must have a bachelor鈥檚 degree in a related discipline. PhD candidates must have a master鈥檚 degree in a related discipline.聽

Letters of Recommendation

Three letters of recommendation should be obtained from college/university faculty members, gallery directors and/or curators familiar with the applicant鈥檚 academic and artistic competence.鈥

Statement of Goals

In 500 to 1,000 words, describe your鈥痠nterest in the program, research goals, future career goals, academic and research achievements, and how you will contribute to the Tyler School of Art and Architecture鈥檚 mission. Submit your statement through .

Academic Transcripts

Official transcripts from all universities/colleges attended must be sent as part of the online application, including those where no degree was awarded, and courses were taken as an undergraduate鈥痮r a graduate student.聽

Standardized Test Scores

Due to testing limitations related to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the Tyler School of Art and Architecture is temporarily waiving submission of GRE scores for applicants to the MA and PhD art history programs for spring and fall 2022 admissions. Applicants may still voluntarily submit GRE test scores, but scores will only be used as a supplement to required application materials.聽

All other admission requirements, including submission of scores for a standardized test of English, if applicable, still need to be met. In some circumstances, the Graduate Admissions Committee may request additional supplemental application materials or an interview as part of the admissions process.

Additional Requirements for International Students聽

Applicants who earned their baccalaureate degree in a language of instruction other than English, except for those who subsequently earned a master鈥檚 degree at a U.S. institution, must report scores for a standardized test of English proficiency that meet these minimums.聽
